For centuries the Portuguese Kings signed under the name of “King of Portugal and the Algarve”. Here in the Algarve the Arabian heritage is still alive, as you can easily see in the terraces and chimneys of many traditional houses, in the scoop wheels, in farming techniques, in the way of speaking and, of course, in the luxurious large orange and almond orchards.

There’s something else that turns this region into a remarkable and unforgettable place: the days are bright and the air is clean. The sunbeams are reflected on the whitewashed houses and walls, on the blue river, on the “ria”(a mix of river and sea) and on the sea, as well as on the golden sandy beaches, which will please everyone, from those who love the endless sandy shore to those who prefer the small beaches with fabulous rocky cliffs.

Located along the banks of a river called Gilão, and connected by a charming old bridge that is known as “Roman Bridge” but in reality is a 12th Century Moorish Bridge, Tavira is a city full of wonders. There are more than thirty churches and the houses show traditional four-sided roofs, which somehow are a greeting card to the most beautiful town in the Algarve. The “Venice of the Algarve”, as it is also known!
